CES 2019: Sennheiser introduces 3D audio tech into first soundbar

Sennheiser is hardly a stranger in the audio space but the company hasn’t released a soundbar, until now. Introducing its Ambeo 3D audio technology into one massive soundbar (we've seen the tech before in the Sennheiser Ambeo Smart headset). The aptly named Ambeo Soundbar comes with 13 speakers: six four-inch woofers, five one-inch tweeters, and two 3.5-inch top-firing speakers. Sennheiser designed it to deliver virtual surround sound in a 5.1.4 configuration, which is five speakers and a subwoofer from a normal 5.1 surround sound system, plus four more speakers in each room. According to Sennheiser, the soundbar transforms stereo and 5.1 content, so that it takes advantage of the additional virtual speakers. The sound is being bounced off the walls to create that surround sound effect. It’s compatible with Dolby Atmos and supports audio streaming over Google Chromecast and Bluetooth. It also has HDMI eARC/CEC, three other HDMI inputs, optical audio port, and AUX input. It’s going on sale for US$2,499 (approx. CA$3,300) in May.

Sennheiser joins ‘Works with Magic Leap’ certification program

Sennheiser just announced it’ll be working with Magic Leap to create spatial audio accessories for the latter’s augmented reality headset’s platform. The headphone and audio gear company will be joining the “Works with Magic Leap” certification program, which is basically a way to ensure the accessories developed for the Magic Leap One will interact with the headset the way it should. Sennheiser hints in the announcement that it might reveal more news at Magic Leap’s L.E.A.P. conference next month.

Sennheiser wins big at Red Dot Award

Sennheiser Urbanite series

Sennheiser got some big nods at the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 for a bunch of its models, including Sports, RS, and Urbanite series. The functional aesthetics and wearing comfort provided by the RS 175, RS 185, and RS 195 helped them clinch a Red Dot Award. These digital wireless models were developed by the company with Brennwald Design in Kiel. Meanwhile, the Sports series, including the MX 686 Sports, CX 686 Sports, PMX 686 Sports, and OCX 686 Sports, were also recognized for the excellent sound quality and comfort for both indoor and outdoor sporting activities.  These models were developed in collaboration with designaffairs. The on-ear  Urbanite and over-ear Urbanite XL impressed the Red Dot jury for the rich bass it delivers and the club-like experience it provides for users on the move.
