Apple CarPlay will soon allow third-party navigation apps

One of the best bits of news from WWDC 2018 was that Apple CarPlay, which is the car infotainment fork of iOS 12 will soon be able to use other navigation solutions aside from Apple Maps. This is tremendous news for fans of Google Maps, Waze or any wacky third-party navigation app.

This is a good move by Apple, it reflects a respect for the end user's choice and is similar to their acceptance of alternate music services on CarPlay (i.e. Google Play, Spotify). CarPlay is the stock infotainment app on many new vehicles and is considered one of the more seamless and safe tools to interact with the apps on one's iPhone safely while riding a vehicle.

iOS apps are coming to the Mac and not the other way around

Apple has two operating systems. Mac OS for laptops and desktops and iOS for iPhones and iPads. Both of these platforms each have app ecosystems. Speculation has been that iOS is the future of Apple and that future means even MacBooks and iMacs will be running iOS and apps instead of the legacy Mac versions moving to mobile.

The UIKit framework discussed at the Apple developer event today showcased some iOS apps being ported to macOS. Most of these ported apps (Voice Memos, Stocks) are simple and almost widget-like in their complexity.

ASUS ROG outs its first gaming smartphone

ASUS’s gaming brand Republic of Gamers just unveiled its first-ever gaming smartphone, taking on the likes of Razer and heating up this new niche segment. It seems like a no-brainer that the Taiwanese company set out to create its own gaming phone but what took them this long? According to ASUS, they wanted to make sure they weren’t just building a smartphone that was simply called a gaming phone but didn’t have any unique features to truly make it a gaming phone. What they set out to do with the ROG Phone is provide four key things: lag-free performance, efficient cooling, blur-free and stunning visuals, and gaming-centric handling.

watchOS 5 brings Auto Workout Detection, Apple Podcasts and a Walkie-Talkie feature

Apple Watch is a key Apple Product and one that has shown tremendous momentum. Now heading into its fourth year, we will be getting watchOS 5 which will enable auto workout detection which senses when a workout is in progress and gives retroactive credit.

Even the most devoted gym rats often forget to start tracking exercises or stop  to move to another exercise or piece of gym equipment which results in faulty stats and tracking.

Adding this feature makes the Apple Watch an even more valuable fitness device. Adding Podcasts to Apple Watch is a huge feature I’ve been waiting for, this means you can sync and download Podcasts for listening on runs or trips to the gym. Also coming are enhanced notifications that make needing to read or respond less time consuming.  A new slew of watch bands and a Pride Watch face were also revealed.

watchOS 5 will not work with the first generation O.G. Apple Watch models.
