Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra gets a 200MP sensor, retains S Pen

Photo: Samsung

Samsung's brought the biggest camera upgrade to its flagship phone. The new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra gets a new 200-megapixel sensor, which is roughly double the resolution of its predecessor. That big leap with megapixels won't mean you get the best quality on its own. Sensor size, speed, and image processing algorithms all play a role. Samsung has emphasized the artificial intelligence capabilities of the S23 series when it comes to improving its night photography and videography.

As with other larger sensors, Samsung employs pixel binning on its main sensor, which means you get 12-megapixel photos by default. You do have the option to shoot the full 200-megapixel resolution, which Samsung sees as a use case for those who want large prints of their photos. There's also a 50-megapixel mode if you wanted something in between.

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo rumoured to skip E3 2023

If the reports are accurate, we won't see the big console makers at E3 2023. A new report from IGN claims Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo won't be coming to the first in-person event since 2020. Sony hasn't been part of the conference since 2019, while Microsoft said it would do a showcase in LA this summer. But the company hasn't mentioned E3 outright. While Nintendo's Direct video presentations generate enough buzz, so it might not want to share the E3 spotlight. E3 is happening from June 13 to 16, so we'll definitely hear more about the game show soon.

Apple rumoured to launch a foldable iPad in 2024

Apple might be ready to launch a folding tablet soon. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the iPhone maker will launch a foldable table in 2024. As Inverse pointed out, it seems like an unusual move given how Apple typically takes a bit more time before launching a new product category. Apple has been rumoured to be working on foldable devices since 2022. But Kuo has been somewhat reliable with his predictions, so it might be time to make a countdown for this product launch. In the meantime, the heavily rumoured Apple device coming is a mixed-reality headset. We are expecting to see that new product this year.

Samsung Galaxy S23 base model will reportedly feature slower storage

We're days away from the Samsung Galaxy S23 series launch, but the leaks aren't stopping. Frequent Samsung leaker Ice Universe claims the company will feature older, slower storage as an option. The base S23's 128GB variant will supposedly use a UFS 3.1 chip instead of Samsung's UFS 4.0 standard. If you want the newer storage tech, you'll need to shell out for the 256GB option. According to Ice, the reason for this change is that Samsung doesn't produce a 128GB UFS 4.0 chip.

According to the company, the UFS 4.0 standard boasts speeds that are twice as fast as the UFS 3.1 memory. It offers sequential read and write speeds of up to 4,200MB/s and 2,800MB/s, respectively. And this new silicon is 46 percent more power efficient, which should help improve the battery life on your phone. Of course, we have to remind you that this is a rumour and should still be taken with a grain of salt. We'll hear more about the Samsung Galaxy S23 series during Samsung's Unpacked launch this February 1.
