Apple’s macOS Catalina adds Auto Dark Mode

One glaring omission when Apple introduced Dark Mode in macOS Mojave was the option to automatically turn the feature on and off depending on the time of day. But with the upcoming release of macOS Catalina, the company finally rectified this. There is now an Auto Dark Mode option. You can head to System Preferences – General to see the three options: Light, Dark, and Auto. If you choose Auto, the different design elements on your desktop will get darker at night and then get lighter during the day. Complementing this feature is the Dynamic Desktop wallpaper, which changes depending on the time of day. As expected, there will be a Santa Catalina Island option that will launch when macOS Catalina launches in the fall.

Toyota accelerates plans for electric vehicles

Toyota has been known for its hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but now it wants to get into battery EVs, too. The company announced its intent to have half of its global sales in 2025 to be from electrified vehicles. The goal is to sell 4.5 million hybrids, with one million EVs either battery- or hydrogen fuel cell-powered. To make sure it hits its target, starting next year, the automaker plans to introduce at least 10 new BEVs. Six of those will be based on the electrified version of its TNGA platform, which is being called e-TNGA. The vehicles will be sold globally. There will also be different electric vehicles that range from SUVs, crossovers, sedans, to MPVs. To make sure they have a steady supply of batteries, Toyota is partnering with China’s CATL and electric car manufacturer BYD.

Facebook will no longer pre-install its apps on Huawei phones

Facebook is the latest US company to comply with the country’s ban on doing business with the Chinese tech company. The social media company announced it would no longer  the pre-installation of its apps on Huawei phones. According to a source familiar with the matter, this affects phones that haven’t left Huawei’s factory yet. Current Huawei owners can still use the apps and receive app updates, but new units won’t have Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram pre-installed. This doesn’t mean you won’t be able to install the apps yourself. As it stands, Huawei devices still have access to the Play Store, so you will be able to download the apps there. But if the ban continues, then Huawei will be losing access to some of the most popular apps out there.
