Facebook’s latest privacy blunder exposes 14 million private posts to the public

A new Facebook blunder has led to the exposure of private posts (or those set only to be shared to a limited number of contacts) of as many as 14 million users to the public. The bug that caused this issue came about as Facebook developers were developing new ways to share photos and other featured items in user profiles. As a result, from May 18 to May 27, the private posts were made public. Facebook’s technicians were able to automatically stop making private posts public on May 22 but it took them another five days to fully restore the privacy settings of those affected posts. Facebook has started notifying on Thursday the users who have been affected by the bug. The company has also been referring users to this Privacy Basics Page.

“We have fixed this issue, and, starting today, we are letting everyone affected know and asking them to review any posts they made during that time,” Facebook Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan said in the statement. “To be clear, this bug did not impact anything people had posted before—and they could still choose their audience just as they always have. We’d like to apologize for this mistake.”

Don’t expect a second season of ‘The Defenders’ anytime soon

Perhaps the low numbers The Defenders has pulled in terms of viewership has dissuaded Marvel and Netflix from making another season. But Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb has said during a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session that it’s “not in the plans right now, but you never know!” The show is labeled as a “limited series” on Netflix and had eight for its first season, which started streaming last August.

While we might not see the superheroes together, Marvel and Netflix has since dropped the first season of The Punisher and the second season of Jessica Jones. Luke Cage’s second season is coming this month, while Iron Fist season two is coming in late 2018. Daredevil’s third season is also coming later this year.

Essential Phone gets magnetic headphone jack module

The first new attachment module for the Essential Phone is finally here. What did Essential decide to finally release? Its magnetic 3.5mm headphone jack dongle. The company has been working on this module since September last year and it has been touted as a major feature since the phone launched but we’re only getting it now. The Audio Adapter HD isn’t just a headphone jack, it also comes with a high-resolution ESS Sabre DAC with an “audiophile-grade amp” that is “crafted from machined titanium for exceptional durability.” No word on pricing yet but it will finally start shipping this summer.

This module is part of the company’s focus on music. One of the other new things coming to the smartphone is support for Tidal’s Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) lossless tracks. Tidal will be offering Essential Phone owners a free three-month subscription to its Hi-Fi tier so they can try out the higher-resolution audio themselves. Rumours have been swirling that Essential has cancelled its second phone and are even looking into selling the company. But it looks like that isn’t affecting the release of new hardware just yet.
