‘Power Rangers’ reboot gets first teaser

It’s almost morphin time and we’re reminded of that thanks to the first teaser trailer for an upcoming Power Rangers movie. Teased at the New York City Comic Con, this Lionsgate film shows five troubled teens discovering powers from a meteorite. Think of it as the franchise entering the YA adventure film genre. And yes, we expect this to be a franchise. The iconic suits were only put on display until the last minute of the trailer. The film is expected to come out on March 24, 2017. Is this something you think you’d watch?

Facebook can now be your calendar app, too

It’s not all that surprising that Facebook now has an app to help you manage Facebook events. And if you rely on this heavily, the social network wants to keep you in its ecosystem—even for your non-Facebook events. There is now a new Events app on iOS launched in the US. It shows you an overview of your upcoming Facebook events as well as your regular iCloud calendar (if you enable it, that is). You can give or revoke access to Events for your regular Calendar events. If you’re on Android and you want this app, Facebook is currently working on a version for you.

Maserati plans to out an electric car by 2020

Maserati might be late in the electric car game but that isn’t stopping them from building their own EV. According to Fiat Chrysler (FC) engineering head Roberto Fedeli, Maserati’s EV might show up as soon as 2020—or possibly 2019. It won’t be like its competitors, though. It could possibly be a low-volume model like a grand-tourer instead of an SUV or large sedan. Fedeli says they want to try and bring something different to the market and it won’t be following in the footsteps of Tesla. In fact, he has a few choice words about Tesla, saying that “the execution and quality of the products of Tesla are the same as a German OEM in the 1970s. Their solutions are not the best.”

One of the big challenges Maserati faces with the EV is on the sporty driving experience and signature engine note the FC division has. They have to work on the lack of sound EV engines produce as well as the weight of the batteries. Another challenge is the electric car’s inability to be enjoyed like a sports car on a normal road is “inconsistent with the brand we are representing,” says Fedeli.

Google Hangouts is now an ‘optional’ in the Google Apps package

Google is “demoting” Hangouts from being part of the core Google Mobile Services apps to become a “GMS Optional for telephony products.” This means manufacturers releasing phones by 2017 (the changes will take effect on December 1, 2016) won’t have to include Hangouts in the core apps included in their phones. The app is being replaced by video calling app Duo. This won’t change the availability of the app. You can still download Hangouts from Google Play Store. And of course some manufacturers might opt to keep the app pre-installed.

It’s curious, though, that Google is opting to replace Hangouts with Duo instead of Allo. But it also shows how Google wants to push its video calling platform.
