Video: Sony Xperia Z smartphone demoed underwater

Sony's Xperia Z is one big step forward for smartphones. Thin, light and powerful, it is also submersible in one meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes and is dust resistant to boot. Featuring a 13 megapixel camera, a delighful 5-inch HD screen as well as a gorgeous scratch-resistant, shatter proof sheet on mineral glass enclosure, it is also the best looking Xperia smartphone so far. We know it is coming exclusively to Bell Mobility in Canada later this month and will be available in Black, White and Purple variants and will also have an optiona charging dock in the same colours. Pricing and exact availability have not been disclosed.

Thinner, lighter and more powerful Nexus 7 tablet launched with Android OS 4.3

The much rumoured and widely leaked Google Nexus 7 (2013) was unveiled today at a Google event in San Francisco together with the launch of the latest version of Android OS Jelly Bean 4.3. The new Nexus 7 features a 1.5GHz  Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 8064 processor and features an unprecedented 323 pixel per inch density. It will be thinner and lighter than the preceding model and now features a 5.0MP rear-facing and 1.2MP front-facing camera, where the previous one only had a front-facing camera. The new Nexus 7 is expected to retail in the US for  $229.99 for 16GB of memory and $269.99 for 32GB, no Canadian availability has been announced so far.

Apple's earnings slowing for iPads and Macs, iPhone is still tops

Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones in the past quarter, blowing past expectations and maintaining its leadership position for smartphones in a number of markets. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $35.3 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.9 billion, or $7.47 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $35 billion and net profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter.
