SlideShow: Apple Event Invitations through the years

Apple launch events are often thematic and a lot of the magic begins with the invitation. These serve to tease and entice invited members of the press and analysts and drop hints about what is coming. The invitations themselves are often dissected and parsed ad nauseam as writers try to extract any hidden clue or Easter egg in the wording or artwork. In the case of the most recent on for September 12, the message is pretty clear. Something 5 is coming.

Breaking: Apple confirms iPhone 5 in launch event invite

The above image is from the invitation that Apple sent some members of the press earlier today which confirms the long-rumoured September 12 iPhone launch event. The number 5 which shows up as a shadow seems to point that they will indeed call it the iPhone 5. The launch will be held in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts on next Wednesday. Note that the 2012 iPhone is really the 6th generation of the device since it launched in 2007. Counting the iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.  We will cover the event live as it happens in San Francisco next week.

Video taken at IFA shows what the next iPhone could look like

It is September and we are getting closer to an Apple announcement pertaining to a phone that they make. The iPhone 4S was announced last October so an update is imminent. The next iPhone has been such a big story that we've seen mainstream media publishing stories based on rumours. The video above shows something cobbled together using existing parts. As with any rumour, take this with a pinch of salt and a shot of tequila. There are a few things that don't feel right about the mock-up, the font on the back and overall finish isn't very Apple-y but the design seems to fit in with some of the other stuff we've seen.
