This is how to charge the Apple Pencil 1st-gen w/ iPad 2022

While we're still trying to figure out why Apple is intent on keeping around its 1st-generation Pencil, we have to live with the fact that you'll need to use that with a 2022 iPad. And the process isn't even straightforward. If you already have that 2017 Apple Pencil, you'll need to buy the USB-C-to-Lightning adapter for $10. If you get the $129 Pencil, the adapter comes with it. And you will need this dongle. According to Apple, the adapter is needed for pairing and charging.

And the charging isn't as straightforward as attaching the adapter to the Pencil and then your iPad. The adapter is female-to-female and not female-to-male, meaning you'll need the iPad's USB-C charging cable. Plug the Pencil on the Lightning port side, then plug the charging cable on the other side before connecting it to the tablet.

This issue hasn't come up before because the other USB-C iPads all charge the 2nd-gen Apple Pencil wirelessly when attached magnetically to the side of the tablet. That isn't available with this base model.
