Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 debuts with improved multitasking

Another Samsung device that got a bit refined is the new Galaxy Z Fold4. Samsung focuses on improving the experience on the Fold with a few tweaks to the design. Samsung slimmed down the hinge, reduced its weight, and narrowed the bezel.

The cover screen is still 6.2 inches but with a 2,316 x 904 resolution and 23.1:9 aspect ratio. (The Galaxy Z Fold4 has a 2,268 x 832 resolution with a 25:9 aspect ratio.) Inside, it has a brighter 7.6-inch display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate (like the cover display) and, as rumoured, a less visible under-display camera. We can't speak about its quality without testing the phone.

That inner display gets more functionality. This is the first foldable to ship with Android 12L, an Android version built for large-screen devices like foldables. You can take advantage of that larger display with improved multitasking. It now has a new Taskbar that resembles what you see on a PC, with quick access to favourite and recent apps. When you're in Flex Mode, the bottom half of the Galaxy Z Fold4 can also be used as a trackpad. This offers you that mini laptop-like experience.

For improved app support, Samsung leverages its partnership with Google and Microsoft to bring features like drag-and-drop support between Google apps. Google Meet gets features like co-watching YouTube videos or playing games together on a call. Microsoft Office suite and Outlook apps should also be more optimized for this device.

Like the Galaxy Z Flip4, the Galaxy Z Fold4 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor with 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The battery on the Galaxy Z Flip4 is a 4,400mAh one with 25W fast charging. Samsung won't be selling that adapter with the foldable, though.

This folding phone is also IPX8 rated for water resistance. Samsung claims the Galaxy Z Fold4 has a sturdier build with the outside protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, while the display is said to be 45% more durable than its predecessor.

Samsung also improved the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold4 with a new triple-lens system that includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor, 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and 10-megapixel telephoto lens that supports 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom. The under-display camera is a 10-megapixel selfie.

There are three colour options for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4: Gray Green, Phantom Black, and Beige. The retail price starts at $2,269, with the phone already available for pre-order.
