Warner Bros. Discovery sues Midjourney for copyright infringement

Source: Warner Bros. Discovery

Warner Bros. Discovery is suing Midjourney for damages over alleged copyright infringement, claiming the AI startup "brazenly dispenses its intellectual property as if it were its own." The entertainment giant claimed in its lawsuit that Midjourney generated "countless" infringing images and videos of its copyrighted characters, such as Superman, Scooby-Doo, Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, and more.

Warner Bros. Discovery is asking the court to stop the AI company from reproducing, displaying, and distributing "unauthorized derivatives" of its intellectual property, which it claimed Midjourney was doing for use on its AI image and video generation tools.

The entertainment company is seeking damages for the alleged infringement, saying Midjourney generates images that violate its copyright even if a specific character wasn't mentioned in the prompt. Warner Bros. Discovery is also looking to prevent Midjourney from offering AI tools without measures that protect copyrighted material.
