Sony to end PlayStation physical disc production in January 2028

Sony plans to officially discontinue the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. The company cited a decisive, industry-wide shift toward digital media, noting that consumer preference for digital downloads now significantly outpaces demand for physical discs.

Following the deadline, all upcoming PlayStation games will be sold exclusively in digital formats through the digital PlayStation Store and via digital code cards at traditional retailers. The transition will not affect existing physical media, as games released on disc before January 2028 will remain fully playable.
