Apple M1 Macs won't support external GPUs

Source: Apple and LG

As expected, Apple has introduced its first lineup of Macs running on its new M1 processor during today's "One more thing" event. The new chip promises to offer better performance and battery life. But, of course, something has to give. Paul Gerhardt points out in a tweet that the new Macs don't support compatible external GPUs that connect via Thunderbolt. Apple Insider confirmed the news that these systems wouldn't support eGPUs.

While most people won't require extra support, it will have creative professionals or gamers who need the additional graphics support question whether the new machines can meet their needs.

Another issue with the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 is it only has two USB-C ports onboard instead of four. But as Engadget notes, it is in line with the cheaper Intel models it replaces. It also is limited to 16GB of RAM. So, those who need more will have to get an Intel-powered model, for now.
