Google gets rid of fingerprint gestures and Night Mode for non-Pixel Nexus devices

Looks like Google is really trying to push Pixel as a special device. The older Nexus devices are losing some key features, including fingerprint sensor gesture support, Night Light Mode/Night Mode. It’s understandable that Google will want to elevate Pixel and features like fingerprint gestures isn’t exactly supported by older Nexus devices. But dropping Night Light Mode/Night Mode is a bit off to us. This feature works like Night Shift on iOS, where it turns down the blue light the screens emit as the sun goes down. Night Mode was introduced to Android 7.0 Nougat, while Night Light is exclusive to Pixel on Android 7.1

According to Googler Ian Lake, Night Light does the color tinting through hardware that isn’t seen on the Nexus. But we can’t think of why they’d get rid of Night Mode since it’s a software solution. And according to SlashGear, it seems Night Mode has even been removed in Android 7.1, too. This leaves even the Nexus 5X and 6P without this feature. We hope Google rethinks this strategy.

Report claims LG might ditch modular accessories for next flagship

LG G5 Modular smartphone - Photo from Tropicalpost.com

Things are not looking good for LG’s Friends, if this new report is to be believed. Korean-based ETNews cites unnamed sources that claim the “LG G6” or whatever the next flagship phone the brand releases won’t support add-on modules (a.k.a. the Friends). The story claims LG executives want to create a new flagship device that reflects what the customers demand instead of trying to bring innovative features that won’t be used by its users.

While the jury is still out on how useful and successful these modular accessory market (especially with Moto having its own ecosystem with modular accessories), dropping out of this segment too early might also not work in LG’s favor. This is still an unconfirmed rumour at the moment so we can’t say with certainty that LG will be ditching its Friends, especially since an LG spokesman has said the upcoming device will support the accessories. Whether it’s true or not, do you think LG should return to doing more traditional phones or stick with this new path?

Birdie lets you throw your GoPro in the air without destroying it

Drones are obviously the easiest way to take footage with your GoPro. But if you don’t have one of these on hand (or don’t want to spend unnecessarily on one), a shuttlecock-like accessory called Birdie might be your answer. Obviously taking inspiration from badminton, the contraption lets you throw a GoPro in the air without damaging it. While it won’t stay up in the air for too long, it could provide you with some interesting footage or photos. You can throw it straight up or ahead towards something or someone. Birdie first appeared as an Indiegogo project but will soon be up on Amazon for $49 USD (around $60 CAD).
