Your future flagship smartphone might have Sony’s dual-camera system

Dual-camera setups for smartphones aren’t exactly that new. But there are rumours of the likes of the iPhone 7 and LG G5 that would be sporting this type of camera system. Adding more credence to the rumours is the recent announcement by Sony’s Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida that “major smartphone players” will be using Sony’s own dual-camera system.

He was asked by an analyst what his thoughts were on dual-camera adoption in the next one to two years and what these could me for operations. “Well, for next year, our so-called dual lens – dual camera platform will be launched by, we believe, from major smartphone players. However, as I said previously, recently, our smartphone market is growing and particularly, our high-end smartphone market is now slowing down. So, that may impact the demand or production schedule of dual camera smartphones by the major smartphone manufacturers. So, we believe the real start, the takeoff of smartphone with dual lens camera will be in the year of 2017.”

Dubuc Motors promises 2017 release for its all-electric supercar

Quebec-based Dubuc Motor first showed off its futuristic Tomahawk concept back in 2013. Now, it’s getting closer to production as the North American brand promises its first release next year. The new Tomahawk ditches the two-seat, mid-engine configuration for a four-seater with both front and rear electric motors with all-wheel drive. But it still keeps that aggressive look, complete with scissor-style doors.

According to Dubuc engineers, the planned top speed for the all-electric car is around 160mph with it being capable of 0-60mph in three seconds. No word on the powertrain yet but with the flat undercarriage of the EV, its battery layout could be distributed along the floor. The goal for the battery is a 300-mile range. Dubuc says they’ve started to show off the Tomahawk at auto shows. It carries a US$110,000 price tag and early buyers can make a $5,000 deposit to reserve one of the first models to come out in 2017.

BlackBerry to let go of 200 jobs in Ontario and Florida

In an effort to trim costs, BlackBerry is letting go of 200 jobs in its hometown headquarters in Ontario and Florida. This new round of layoffs with affect 75 manufacturing jobs in Sunrise, Florida, according to a state government site. Meanwhile, it’s rumoured that a lot of the job cuts in Canada involve people who are working on the BB10 device software. Gary Klassen, one of the company’s longest-tenured employees and the inventor of the BBM messaging service, is also leaving the company with this latest rounded of cuts.

BlackBerry won’t divulge the percentage of its workforce that has been affected by this latest round of layoffs. The Canadian company is trying to turn its fortunes around by putting its focus in its enterprise software business. BlackBerry let go of around 200 staff members back in September. The employees who were laid off then worked on the design and hardware of BB10 devices. But a spokeswoman for BlackBerry assures its users that they will still release updates for its BB10 software.
