Ride-hailing app Sidecar shuts down

One of the pioneers of the ride-sharing/ride-hailing business is closing its doors. Sidecar was one of the first startups to bring the sharing economy concept to cars. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the clout as the likes of Uber. Sunil Paul, CEO and co-founder of Sidecar announced on a blog post that they will end the service on Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. ET. They tried to supplement the ride-hailing aspect with a delivery service but it seems it wasn’t enough to keep them afloat. The company, though, isn’t entirely dead as Paul said they are working on “strategic alternatives” and are laying the groundwork for “the next big thing.”

"Shutting down the Sidecar service is a disappointment for our team and our fans. The impact of our work, however, will be felt for generations to come. We changed transportation law, and created a new mode of transportation that has transformed cities and made life easier and better for millions of people." he wrote.

Microsoft said to back up your Windows encryption keys on the cloud

The cloud is a useful place to store various files. But it’s probably not the safest place to store really important data, like the encryption key to your Windows PC. Unfortunately, Microsoft seems to be storing this online. So, what should you do about this? Head to the OneDrive Recovery Key site and log into your Microsoft account. If you find your key there, back it up somewhere like a flash drive that you will keep safe and then delete it from the site. Make sure it’s in a physically safe location that no one you don’t trust can get to.

Twitter updates its terms of service to help fight harassment

Twitter is a hotbed of trolls and the company is letting you know they are against this. They’ve updated their terms of service to address harassment more head on. A new section for “hateful conduct” has been added. It reiterates that users can’t threaten or promote violence towards other people based on things like race, gender, ethnicity, etc. And while that’s good move, there still needs to be more action to make sure these trolls don’t malign or threaten anyone on their site.
