Review: Samsung Galaxy S5 Active

Text and photos by Saif Hashmi

All of my co-workers have some sort of bulky case like the OtterBox for protection. I see no need for that with the S5 Active. In this Business, If you don't protect your phone, its only a matter of days till your in the market for a new one.

Over the course of the last few weeks, I've had the pleasure of putting the new Samsung Galaxy S5 Active from TELUS through its paces.

Because my work keeps me outside daily for long hours doing interlock stonework and asphalt paving, I was asked to see how it would handle the outdoor construction environment.

Microsoft launches post-Nokia Lumia 535 smartphone in Asia

Just as the Lumia 830 was the last Windows Phone handset to carry the Nokia name, the new Lumia 535 is the first post-Nokia device to kick off the Microsoft era of smartphone making. A continuation of the Nokia X and Lumia 530 entry-level smartphone range slated for various Asian markets, this particular device seems geared towards a youthful user-base.

Featuring a 5-inch qHD, (960x540; 16:9) screen, dual 5-megapixel front and rear cameras, the Lumia 535 is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. 8GB of onboard storage is supplemented by microSD expansion of up to 128 GB storage. This will come with Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim with Cortana in tow. Lastly, there's a choice of colours including bright green, bright orange, white, dark grey, cyan, and black. While this looks like an ideal and affordable midrange smartphone for Canada, no word on availability outside of China has been announced.

Apple remedies missing text issue for those who transfer platforms

If you have found yourself missing text messages after you switched to an Android or Windows Phone device from an iPhone, Apple is helping you out with a little tool that will deregister your phone number from iMessage. The issue apparently is that Apple routes your incoming messages to iMessage so when you make the switch, texts from iPhone users disappear into the ether. Apple wants to note though that traditional SMS are not routed through iMessage servers.

If you forgot to disable iMessage before switching phones, the only available solution before was to completely disconnect your device from an Apple account. Now, you just need to input your number into Apple’s deregistration site and put in the verification sent to you.
