Samsung promises 4 years of Android security updates on devices


Samsung will continue to offer at least four years of Android security updates on a variety of devices in its Galaxy Z, S, A, M, XCover and Tab lines. This is an extension of Samsung's earlier three year commitment. This is great news for owners of these devices planning on keeping them a bit longer. “Mobile devices play such an important role in our lives," said Samsung's Mobile VP and head of security Seungwon Shin. "It’s only natural that we want to hold onto them longer. That’s why, thanks to the latest technology advancements, we’re committing to securing Galaxy devices for even longer, so that everything that should be kept protected stays protected.”

In orer to continue provideing security and feature updates, Samsung reportedly teamed up with Google, chipset partners, and wireless carriers and sellers to more efficiently deliver security updates to existing devices. Hit jump to see the full list of supported Samsung devices.

Get your blood pumping with Fitbit's 'Get in Your Zone Challenge'

Fitbit always has gamified fitness by offering badges and trophies to motivate its users to move. The newest way Fitbit wants you to exercise this week is its "Get in Your Zone Challenge" that kicks off today. Its focus is on Active Zone Minutes, and it encourages you to have a "friendly competition with yourself." 

The aim is to meet your recommended amount of time this heart rate-based metric suggests. Active Zone Minutes coincide with the American Heart Association's recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.

Leaked concept videos show Samsung's AR plans

Samsung's plans for augmented reality space are revealed in a couple of leaked videos on Twitter. WalkingCat, a known leaker of Samsung and Microsoft products, released two videos over the weekend. One is showing the "Glasses Lite," and another on "AR Glasses."

As 9to5Google points out, the videos look like internal concept videos rather than upcoming products. Don't expect these to magically appear on shelves soon.

A Samsung Android-based smartwatch in the works?

Samsung's last Android-based smartwatch, the Gear Live, was released back in 2014. From then on, the company has relied on its Linux-based Tizen operating system to power its smartwatches. But a new tweet from Ice universe hints at the company releasing an Android-based smartwatch to replace Tizen. The renowned Samsung leaker didn't mention Google's Wear OS, so it could mean that Samsung is releasing a smartwatch using a customized Android OS. 

According to a Galaxy Club reportSamsung is reportedly working on two wearables with model numbers SM-R86x and SM-R87x, which might be the Galaxy Watch Active 3 or 4 series. It isn't clear if these will have Android as their operating system.
