First Look at Apple's Mac Pro desktop

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Apple's much awaited Mac Pro started shipping a few weeks ago and we just received our review unit. This is the 12-core processor version with 32GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. It comes in a simple black box with a few flyers, black Apple stickers and a power cord.

The Mac Pro itself is stunning to behold. It is  indescribably shiny and it weighs so little and is small enough to carry with one hand. The conical shape is extremely well balanced and is built to an impressive degree of precision. One button quickly liberates the lock so you can remove the outer shell which reminds me of Darth Vader or Magneto's helmet. I'm scrounging around for a spare keyboard, mouse and monitor to hook up to this bad boy and expect to have a more detailed review in a few weeks time.

The Apple Beat: Outlook for early 2014

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

It's this time of year, right after the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), that I most miss the Macworld Apple Keynotes.

I know, Apple hasn't participated in a Macworld expo since 2010 (and the show has since moved to late March and been rebranded as Macworld/iWorld). More than anything, I miss the anticipation of seeing new product or OS announcements this early in the year, it sort of sets the stage for what's to come, and also whips Apple's competitors into a frenzy  to figure out how they can counter or copy what's been announced.

Apple's new Mac Pro has a replaceable socketed CPU

The new Mac Pro is truly a uniquely designed desktop unlike anything anyone has seen before. Yet, the fact that this compact computer is one of the first fully-solid state workstations in the market (meaning no moving parts), makes some potential buyers nervous.

But fear not, the most important components of the Mac Pro can be replaced and upgraded quite easily. The RAM and, most surprisingly, the CPU can be replaced if need be. The fly in the ointment is that the SSD drives and the graphics cards are permanent.
