Canada-Wide Science Fair comes to Edmonton this May

Youth Science Canada

The Edmonton EXPO Centre and the University of Alberta will play host to Canada's brightest young scientists from May 23 to 30. Youth Science Canada's 64th annual Canada-Wide Science Fair will bring 400 student finalists from across the country to showcase 346 STEM projects. These young researchers are competing for a $2 million prize pool in awards and scholarships, with the week-long event culminating in an awards ceremony at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on the evening of May 28.

The public is invited to engage with the next generation of innovators during three open-house days. Visitors can explore the Project Zone on Sunday, May 24, or visit during the STEM Expo on May 28 and 29, which will also feature interactive exhibits from over 50 universities and government agencies alongside the student projects. For those unable to make it to Edmonton, virtual access will be available through this link.

2022 marks the 60th anniversary of Youth Science Canada's (YSC) flagship event, the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). And this year, the event will be hosted virtually by the University of New Brunswick from May 16 to 20. CWSF is the country's biggest youth science, technology, engineering, and mathematics event.

As students compete at regional fairs leading up to this big event, YSC encourages the participants to join the purpleSTEMwave. It's a campaign unified with YSC's purpose to encourage Canada's youth to investigate scientific questions and develop innovative solutions for existing and future issues. Students earn a spot as a CWSF finalist by competing at their regional fairs.
