Kobo's new Aura One eReader is bigger and has improved night reading capabilities

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

eReaders haven't been terribly exciting for some time now. The rise of tablets and phablets has fragmented the market and most users are happy reading on the devices that they already carry with them all the time.

Kobo, clearly pushing for differentiation, has released the Aura One eReader with a larger 7.8" E Ink screen, waterproofing, a new ComfortLight PRO feature that reduces blue-light exposure for nightime reading and improved functionality for borrowing eBooks from a public library.

Coming to Canada on August 30 for 249.99, the Kobo Aura One was designed in collaboration with Kobo's customers and aims to be the one eReader that best fits all and it can be submerged under water for one hour.

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Google's release of their Duo 1-to-1 video calling application for Android and iOS device signifies a serious move into the personal communication app space. Looking at rival Apple's iPhone, one of the key applications and features that has made it easy to grow the ecosystem is FaceTime on iOS and macOS devices. Google's Duo is a clear cross-platform move to challenge FaceTime as well as create the foundation for a new class of lightweight and dedicated apps.

I reached out to Google Canada to get more perspective on what Duo can do and what it really means. Below is a transcript of our Q&A.

Review: Tablo by Nuvyyo

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

For most cord-cutters, getting rid of their expensive cable TV subscription also means getting rid of some perks and useful features. This includes the ability to record TV shows through a DVR  which is usually provided by the Cable TV company. Removing a cable box subscription also means returning the DVR which also only works with a cable subscription.

Need to check on laundry but don't want to miss Michael Phelp's last historic race for gold? The Nuvyyo Tablo can turn your iPad or Android tablet into a mini-HDTV and an optional monthly subscription helps find programming as well as schedule recordings.

HP's Elite X3 available on HP.com starting September 3

The most promising advancement in Windows Phones....Ok, the ONLY advancement in Windows Phones this year seems to be HP's Elite X3, the enterprise-focused flagship device that's designed to work as a desktop and notebook replacement (together with some costly accessories), will reportedly be shipping to US customers on September 5 with orders starting on August 29.

The closest thing to the mythical 'Surface Phone' ideal, the Elite X3 is powered by a Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64GB of onboard storage, a 5.96" 1440p AMOLED display. This is more horespower than many cheap Windows tablets and should be sufficient for running Windows 10 on Continuum as well as some productivity apps.

The HP Elite X3 was announced way back in February. We don't know if it is going to be available in Canada or what the pricing would be if that is the case. US pricing is supposed to start at $700 without the accessories.
