Huawei will reportedly lay off hundreds of employees at its US R&D facilities

The implications of the US blacklisting on Huawei’s business is reportedly affecting the jobs it offers in the country. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the company will be laying off hundreds of employees at Futurewei Technologies, its U.S. research and development lab. The company has begun informing some staff from its offices in Texas, Silicon Valley, and Washington State that they are letting people go. Some of their Chinese employees are being given the option to return home and stay with the company. Other layoffs are also reportedly planned in the future.

Huawei CEO claims HongMengOS is faster than Android and macOS

Huawei CEO and founder Ren Zhengfei is setting our expectations for its alternative operating system. In an interview with a French magazine, he claims that HongMengOS will be faster than Android and that it’ll have broader applications as well. It will work not just with smartphones but with devices like tablets, routers, computers, network switches, as well as data centers. He even claims it’ll be quicker than macOS, with less than 5ms processing delay. The company continues to develop the operating system despite US’s softened ban on Huawei.

Huawei to update 14 of its current lineup to Android Q

While we don’t know what Huawei’s relationship with Google will be, for now the company is promising to update a number of its phone to EMUI 10, which is based on Android Q. This includes the Huawei P30 Pro, P30, P30 Lite, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20, Mate 20X 5G, P20 Pro, P20, P Smart 2019, P Smart+ 2019, P Smart Z, as well as its Honor 20 series. That includes the Honor 20 lite, Honor 20, and Honor 20 Pro. EMUI 10 has a new user interface as well as a redesigned camera app with additional scene support. The EMUI logo has been tweaked as well as the system menus.
