Any Apple launch event easily obscures the majority of technology launch events happening at the same time. Events focused on a new iPhone are easily the most anticipated and widely covered.

How crazy does it get? While watching the local news on CP24 this morning, the hosts were discussing the invitations sent by Apple to select media for the upcoming September 10 launch to be held in Cupertino. Most smartphone launch events will never gain mention in a morning news show, but an Apple invitation to an upcoming event is big enough news.

Poll: HTC One is the Canadian Reviewer reader's choice for best smartphone

Our readers have spoken and voted on the HTC One as the best smartphone right now with 116 votes out of 370 (31.35% of the votes). Second is the iPhone 5 with 75 votes (20.27 % of the votes) which isn't bad at all for a model that is almost a year old. Third place was the Samsung Galaxy S4 (with 67 votes or 18.11 %). By choosing the HTC One, readers have shown that they are keen on quality materials, great functionality and features. HTC One and iPhone 5 also represent two of the best crafted handsets in the market today and this is clearly a priority with users. The innovation and feature set of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 scored big with readers as well.

iOS 7 beta 4 reveals fingerprint scanner feature possible in next iPhone

Some folks digging around the developer version of iOS 7 beta 4 have uncovered a Biometric Kit which when paired with the fact that Apple purchased semiconductor-based Authentec last Summer for $356 million, then it is likely that Apple might include a fingerprint scanner for added security and access control in upcoming iOS devices.

Authentec makes fingerprint sensor chips used in personal computers and mobile devices. More than just access control, Authentec can add functionality to the home button of most iOS devices by making them more accurate cursors as well as access specific functions or apps upon verification.

Apple's earnings slowing for iPads and Macs, iPhone is still tops

Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones in the past quarter, blowing past expectations and maintaining its leadership position for smartphones in a number of markets. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $35.3 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.9 billion, or $7.47 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $35 billion and net profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter.
