Nikon evolves new 1 V3 mirrorless camera for prosumers

Nikon's been the Johnny-come-lately of the mirrorless camera set. Its small and consumer-focused Nikon 1 line has gone for small sizes, cutesy colours and a simple approach to taking great photos. This all changes with the new Nikon 1 V3 which is decidedly prosumer-focused. The Nikon 1 V3  sports a built-in viewfinder, a new 18.4MP , built-in WiFi, 1080/60p video capability plus can manage an unprecedented 20 frames per second shooting for stills and 120 frames per second slow motion video. The 1 V3 with a grip and 10-30mm kit lens will retail for IS $1,200.00 this April. Exciting stuff!

SlideShow: Canon's EOS M mirrorless compact camera leaked

It seems that Canon has finally decided to launch a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera line with this EOS M camera that has been leaked. Seems rather compact and more similar to a point-and shoot with basic controls  than some of the more complicated models. The design is very minimalist and seems to be touchscreen driven with quick controls for stills or video.

The beauty of a Canon mirrorless system is that it will likely have access to all the great lenses. If this new camera has an APS-C sized sensor and sells at a reasonable price with good lens choices, it will surely shake up the mirrorless camera market.

Review: Sony NEX-7 Digital Camera

Text and photos by Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Sony's NEX 7 ($ 1200) is easily the epitome of how far mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras have gone. This is a prosumer-oriented compact APS-C sensor camera that has a 24 megapixel sensor and 2.4M dot OLED electronic viewfinder into its magnesium alloy body and yet still finds room for a pop-up flash and Alpha hot shoe. We spent some time with a pre-production model (the NEX-7 is slated for an early 2012 release, pending production ramp up in flood-stricken Thailand). Here are our impressions of what Popular Photography magazine has chosen as Camera of the Year.

Review: Nikon 1 J1 Interchangeable Lens Camera

Text and photos by Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

When Nikon finally decided to join the mirrorless and ILC (Interchangeable Lens Cameras) this year, many enthusiasts expected expensive prosumer type models with a lot of technical features similar to Nikon's market leading DSRLs. The Nikon 1 J1 ($649) with a 10-30mm lens, the more consumer oriented of the two models released isn't dirt cheap and it isn't all that complicated to use. With a Lego-like cuteness factor seemingly geared to the fashionable and trendy set and an extremely compact body, the Nikon 1 J1 is full of surprises.
