Qualcomm and OPPO partner to bring ray tracing to Android games

Source: Qualcomm and OPPO

When the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile chipset comes out, you can expect a fully optimized hardware-based ray tracing feature, which we'll see on devices like the upcoming OPPO Find X flagship phone. OPPO took the stage at the ongoing Snapdragon Summit 2022 to demonstrate the latest achievements OPPO and Qualcomm have made in mobile ray tracing technology.

The next Qualcomm chip is expected to offer multiple ray tracing effects, allowing top mobile games to run at a steady 60 frames per second while offering "life-like soft shadows and reflections for the highest gaming visual quality." Its ray tracing render efficiency is increased by a factor of five and with a reduced CPU workload by 90%.

Qualcomm Snapdragon chips are expected to power Samsung Galaxy S23 series exclusively

Rumours have been going around that the next-generation Samsung Galaxy S23 flagships will run exclusively on Snapdragon chipsets. During Qualcomm's Q4 earnings call, CFO Akash Palkhiwala confirmed expectations for a strong second half of the March quarter in 2023. This time frame coincides with the first months of sales for the Galaxy S23 series. He also said the company has moved from a 75% share of chipsets in the Galaxy S22 series to the global share for the S23 line.

Qualcomm's CEO Cristiano Amon also confirmed a multiyear partnership with Samsung to expand the use of Snapdragon chipset to all premium Samsung Galaxy phones globally. We can't outright confirm yet that an Exynos-powered S23 is out of the question. But we're sure to hear more as the launch of the new Samsung flagship approaches.

Nothing confirms phone (1)'s mid-range Snapdragon 778G+ processor

Source: Nothing

Ahead of the July 12 launch, Nothing has confirmed the chipset powering its first device. The phone (1) will run on a custom-tuned mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ processor. This means it's not built to be comparable to flagship devices from its competitors. The processor's performance will be similar to the regular 778G chip, with an eight-core CPU composed of four performance (ARM Cortex-A78) and four efficiency cores (ARM Cortex-A55), Adreno 642L GPU, and an X53 5G modem.

What's different is it brings wireless charging and reverse wireless charging to this mid-range processor. Qualcomm typically reserves that capability for its flagship mobile chipsets, but it looks like it wanted to make an exception for Nothing. It's expected to be more power-efficient, which should extend battery life. The company says it's 30% "better performing from a heating, saving, etc." point of view.

Qualcomm unveils new reference AR glasses

Qualcomm has a new version of its augmented reality glasses. It hopes they can help hardware partners build their immersive eyewear. The Wireless AR Smart Viewer Reference Design can now tether wirelessly to a host PC, phone, or puck. It's also 40% thinner than the previous generation and should have a better-balanced weight distribution.

It runs on a slightly older Snapdragon XR2 platform. Each eye features a 1080p, 90Hz micro-OLED display that prevents motion blur. You get an entire six-degrees-of-freedom movement with the help of three cameras (two monochrome, one colour) and hand tracking and gesture recognition. It has both Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth to keep lag under 3ms between the glasses and host device. Many manufacturers already have access to them, and more should get their turn within the "coming months."
