If you're using an iPhone running on iOS 9 or older, you won't be able to use WhatsApp anymore. A support document on WhatsApp's site states that its users will be to using at least an iOS 10, which means you'll need to have at least an iPhone 5 or later model. If you're using an older device, WhatsApp recommends you export your chat history before losing access to the app.

The change will only affect a small number of iOS users. As iMore points out, only two percent of iPhone users are still running iOS 12 or earlier versions.

WhatsApp desktop adds voice and video call support

WhatsApp has been testing the ability to make voice and video calls on the desktop for the last few months. But now it's getting a wider release. Like with the app, voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, making sure only those talking to each other will have access to the call's contents.

Group calls aren't available on the desktop yet, but WhatsApp plans to introduce the feature in the future. To use video and voice calls on the desktop, you will still need a mobile WhatsApp account.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp will be the latest messaging service to get voice and video call support on its desktop app. A company spokesperson shared the news with Reutersbut it isn't clear if it's going to try and compete against the likes of Zoom and Google Meet in the enterprise space.

WhatsApp has over two billion users, with many of them using the service for personal calls. In time for the holidays, some desktop users are getting the feature already on a trial basis. We don't have information about when the full rollout next year will be.
