WhatsApp tests chat history migration between Android & iOS

Your messaging app of choice might already allow for chat history migration between platforms. But that's something that isn't available on WhatsApp yet—until now. The Facebook-owned messaging service is reportedly testing out this option, which is part of the app's new strategic change to run WhatsApp on multiple devices simultaneously.

A screenshot from WABetaInfo shows that those on iOS need the latest WhatsApp update available on the App Store or Test Flight to avoid any compatibility error with the Android app. We don't know yet how to test this feature or when it'll be released, but we're hoping it comes sooner than later.

WhatsApp is currently working on offering different playback speeds for voice messages. According to WABetaInfo, the app version with this feature is still in the works, but it's expected to show up in a future build. It will allow you to speed up messages at 1.5x or 2.0x speed. Since this is just a preview, we don't know yet what you'll need to do to access this option. But it's in development for both Android and iOS.

WhatsApp no longer supports iOS 9

If you're using an iPhone running on iOS 9 or older, you won't be able to use WhatsApp anymore. A support document on WhatsApp's site states that its users will be to using at least an iOS 10, which means you'll need to have at least an iPhone 5 or later model. If you're using an older device, WhatsApp recommends you export your chat history before losing access to the app.

The change will only affect a small number of iOS users. As iMore points out, only two percent of iPhone users are still running iOS 12 or earlier versions.

WhatsApp desktop adds voice and video call support

WhatsApp has been testing the ability to make voice and video calls on the desktop for the last few months. But now it's getting a wider release. Like with the app, voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, making sure only those talking to each other will have access to the call's contents.

Group calls aren't available on the desktop yet, but WhatsApp plans to introduce the feature in the future. To use video and voice calls on the desktop, you will still need a mobile WhatsApp account.
