YouTube Music introduces new dynamic homescreen backdrops

Google has been busy developing YouTube Music ahead of the phasing out of Play Music. One of the newest features is a cosmetic change. YouTube Music's web app gets a new set of backdrops that accompany the homescreen carousels. When you first load the web app, it'll show you groups of albums, charts, and playlists that you can choose from. In the background, there was the orange hexagonal backdrop. Now, the image changes to a different photo depending on what carousel is on top. For example, "Throwback jams" shows a record player as the backdrop. It's a design feature that helps give YouTube Music its distinctive look.

YouTube Music for Android now shows lyrics on the 'Now Playing' screen

If you like singing along while listening to music, YouTube Music now supports built-in lyrics on Android. The lyrics are accessible by tapping on the info icon located to the left of the song's name. Selecting this icon will pull up a panel that shows views and like count, and shortcuts to the artist and album page. Below that, there is a Lyrics section. And if you scroll to the very bottom, you'll see where Google sourced the lyrics from. It doesn't seem to be widely rolled out yet, but we expect the feature to show up on more Android devices, and hopefully later on iOS and the web.

YouTube Music now shows new album and single releases

Admittedly a glaring omission from the start, but thankfully, that has changed. YouTube Music on mobile will now show you all the new album and single releases. There’s a new carousel on the app’s Home feed that will show you all the new music. A new “See all” button will bring you to a new “Albums & singles” page, where you can endlessly scroll to see what’s new and fresh. Previously, the app will only show you the 10 most recent album or single releases when swiping horizontally. YouTube started rolling this feature out earlier this month, but it’s now widely available on both Android and iOS.

YouTube Music might let you upload your own music library

YouTube Music might be taking cues from what it's done with Google Play Music by letting you upload your library to the service. 9to5Google found the feature in the latest APK file of the app. New strings of code say it can have "all your songs in one place." It also talks about tracks from your album will show alongside the liked and added songs. 

The option could appear as a new tab in YouTube Music's Library section with a possible way to adjust what you see there in the settings page. The feature could look like the screenshot above, but that might not be the final form. 9to5Google believes this could also include content from Google Play Music. Google hasn't enabled this feature yet, so we're waiting for the time the company decides to do so.
