Google Duo might get caption support for incoming video, audio

It looks like Google is planning to bring support for live text captions for incoming audio and video messages in its Duo app. App researcher Jane Manchun Wong discovered the feature and shared a screenshot that shows the video messaging app having an option to transcribe or put captions for messages sent or received.

This feature might not be that useful for Pixel 4, 3, or 3a, which all have Live Caption already. But for other Android users, this feature can mirror that ability within Google Duo. The screenshot suggests that the transcription will happen off-device instead of on-device like with Live Caption. But the option claims content won't be stored. It's unclear whether the feature would need an internet connection to work, and whether it'll be coming soon to Android and iOS. But we will be keeping an eye out for it.

OnePlus teases 'special project' with cryptic photo and video

OnePlus is cooking something up, but we can't exactly say what that is if we base it on the company's latest teaser. A tweet on the OnePlus UK account states, "We're working on something really cool and we really can't tell you yet. To be continued." Rumours about the upcoming OnePlus 8 have already started surfacing, so it's logical to think it's related to that. Some of the recent speculations suggest one of the phones in the series will come with wireless charging, while all three units will feature hole-punch displays. But we can't exactly say how the image relates to that. Some people on Twitter are speculating the company might be working on a foldable device or power bank.

But then, the company also tweeted recently that it's working on a "special project" that isn't a phone or commercial product. And then showed off a quick clip a few hours ago showing off the mystery project and the words "Making progress." The date 03.03.2020 was also seen at the end of the clip. What's your guess? What do you think OnePlus is cooking up?

Facebook cancels F8 conference citing coronavirus concerns

Facebook won't be pushing through with its biggest event of the year over concerns about the novel coronavirus (or COVID-19) outbreak. The F8 developer, which is a mostly-annual conference, was scheduled to take place on May 5 and 6 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. The highly anticipated Facebook event attracted over 5,000 developers, entrepreneurs, and creators from around the world last year. Facebook's decision mirrors the cancellation of this year's Mobile World Congress due to COVID-19.

Konstantinos Papamiltiadis, Facebook's director of developer platforms and programs, said in a statement, "This was a tough call to make—F8 is an incredibly important event for Facebook and it's one of our favourite ways to celebrate all of you from around the world—but we need to prioritize the health and safety of our developer partners, employees, and everyone who helps put F8 on."
