CES 2019: Nissan to demo tech that lets you ‘see’ around corners, find parking space

Nissan wants to make the invisible visible to you—like accidents in an unseen, upcoming corner or even a parking slot opening up near your destination. These are just a couple of practical implementations of what Nissan is calling its Invisible-to-Visible technology (I2V). And while it makes you think of uncloaking your car that’s hidden under an invisibility cloak, that isn’t what this future tech is about. Instead, what Nissan wants to achieve with this technology is to merge your physical and virtual worlds into a system you can use while on the road. It combines information from the sensors outside and inside the car as well as data from the cloud to help you see what’s happening behind a corner or street coming up so you can avoid traffic, watch out for pedestrians, and as mentioned, help you locate parking slots.

The automaker also introduces the idea of the “Metaverse,” which Wheels.ca describes as a “blockchain project that provides a foundational infrastructure for social and enterprise needs.” Through I2V technology and its access to the Metaverse, you can even have companions inside the car that are three-dimensional, augmented-reality avatars. These can be everyone from loved ones to local guides or professional drivers to help you while you’re on the road. The video above expounds what I2V hopes to bring to your future drives.

CES 2019: LG to bring rollable OLED TV to market

LG has been playing around with rollable OLED displays for awhile now. It showed a prototype of this TV at last year’s CES. But now it’s going to be a sold to the public at the second half of the year. Called the Signature Series OLED TV R. This comes with a 65-inch display, which hides away in a credenza-like box that also houses the Dolby Atmos sound system. It’s a TV for those with really deep pockets (no price yet but expect it to be extremely expensive) that have a view they’d like to show off to their guests or those who just don’t want to be staring at a black screen when it’s off.

CES 2019: ASUS reverses the notch in its laptop with slimmest display bezel

Bezels aren’t just shrinking in smartphones, laptops have also started to lose them. ASUS’s latest attempt has the company reversing the notch and hiding its bottom bezel beneath the keyboard. The ZenBook S13 introduces the “world’s slimmest bezel” with a 97 percent screen-to-body ratio. ASUS achieved this by creating what can be considered a reverse notch (the webcam sticks out at the top of the screen) and hiding the bottom bezel below the keyboard when the laptop is open. On either side of the 13.9-inch 1080p display, the bezels are at 2.5mm, which means the overall footprint of this laptop is less than most 13-inch laptops.

The ZenBook S13 is powered by an 8th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of PCIe SSD storage. Impressively, ASUS was able to squeeze in NVIDIA’s GeForce MX150 GPU. These slim laptops usually rely on integrated graphics, so putting in discrete graphics is a great addition. Letting games like Fortnite can even run at the display’s native 1080p in 30fps. It comes with two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, and a microSD card reader. There’s also an integrated fingerprint sensor in the trackpad. The laptop is expected to launch in Q1, but no word on pricing just yet.

Samsung’s new TVs get Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support

So, Samsung is trying to bring more value to its new TVs. On top of its support for iTunes and AirPlay 2, Samsung is also bringing support for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. But there’s a caveat to this. The new TVs will respond to voice commands from these two digital assistants through Alexa- and Google Assistant-powered smart speakers. The built-in voice assistant and one you can talk to through the remote will still be Samsung’s Bixby Assistant. The commands it can execute is rudimentary at the moment. Using Google Assistant or Alexa, you’ll be able to turn on the TV, change channels and volume, or switch between inputs. There’s no word yet if richer features are coming, but Samsung should update us if they are bringing more.
