Mastercard gets regulatory approval to acquire VocaLink

Mastercard received approval fromm the UK’s Competition & Markets Authority’for the completion of the company’s planned acquisition of VocaLink Holdings Limited. The CMA gave final approval for the proposed set of remedies that address the competition concerns the CMA identified earlier this year. The deal is now expected to close in the coming weeks.

“We believe the future of payments will be defined by choice,” said Michael Miebach, chief product officer, Mastercard. “Adding bank account-based payments alongside our card network extends what we can do and how we can do it. Together, we’ll be one partner to meet all payment needs of businesses, governments and consumers.”

Overview of the Canadian Gaming Industry

Canada has had a long history of gambling. Prior to 1970, gambling needed to occur under certain conditions and was more restrictive. However, in 1970, the codes were changed to give the power to the provinces when it came to gambling regulations. Following this, the gambling industry grew significantly. The country’s first commercial casino opened its doors in 1989 and was quickly followed by others. The casino industry is still flourishing today.

Two Canadian universities chosen for new Autonomous Vehicle Competition

At WCX 17: SAE World Congress Experience, SAE International and General Motors announced that the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo are finalists among eight North American universities who will compete in the upcoming autonomous vehicle design competition, AutoDrive Challenge.

This new autonomous vehicle design competition will be a three-year challenge to develop and demonstrate a full autonomous driving passenger vehicle. The competition’s technical goal is to navigate an urban driving course in an automated driving mode as described by SAE Standard (J3016) level four definition by Year 3.

The other finalists are: Kettering University, Michigan State University, Michigan Tech, North Carolina A&T University, Texas A&M University and Virginia Tech.
