HTC debuts RE mobile sports camera

Rumours of HTC entering the wireless sports camera market have just been confirmed. The company just unveiled the HTC RE, a pipe/periscope-like device. Its shape is reportedly meant to make the 96.7x26.5 mm camera better to hold and it has extra sensors in the grip area that turns it on when you hold it. It has one shutter button that takes both 16-megapixel still shots and 1080p videos and has a wide-angle 146-degree lens. It is IP57 waterproof even without a case and comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

There is a RE-specific app on Android and iOS that will let you basic edit, share, and create time-lapse videos. It will eventually let you live broadcast on YouTube as well. It will come with an 8GB micro SD card in its slot but you can add up to 128GB via micro SD. Its 920 mAh battery will last for 100 minutes of video or 1,200 shots and can be charged via micro USB. It will be available in four colours in the US with a US$199.99 base price. International release is planned but there is no specific date yet.

Google+ allows for selective backup of photos in local folders

If it annoys you that Google+ uploads all the random photos stored in your smartphone, Google has just fixed that problem for you. The app now lets you choose which local folders you want to backup to the cloud. You can access this feature by enabling Auto Backup in Google+ and then head to Photos app. Select the “On Device” menu in the slide-out panel and pick which folders you want to upload. It’s a server-side update so you should be getting it even if you haven’t updated your app yet. But, of course, it is best you use the newer versions.

Facebook tipped to be working on anonymous mobile app

Facebook has been getting flak for its real name policy and they seem to have a different solution for it: create a different anonymous app. The New York Times reports that the company is working on an app that will let users interact with each other anonymously. And the purported app is coming pretty soon. It will reportedly let users register under multiple identities and discuss topics you wouldn’t normally talk about when you use your real name.

Microsoft brings you clearer GIFs with Blink photo app on Windows Phone

Microsoft wants to make sure the GIFs you make look better with the new update for its Blink app. The burst mode camera app is helping improve the image quality of creating GIFs with a series of still photos. The new algorithm is said to reduce the “noise” in images.

“Blink automatically analyzes the motion in the scene. Where the motion can be stabilized the algorithm effectively performs a very long exposure by merging the entire Blink sequence, where the motion can’t be stabilized the sequence is left untouched. One way to think of this is optical image stabilization on a region by region basis,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
