New Roku 3 update brings search to smartphone

For those Roku users who don’t have the company’s HDMI Streaming Stick, you now have a chance to do searches on your smartphone with the upcoming update for Roku 3 devices. The rollout is expected to wrap up by April 22. So if the update hasn’t come your way, just wait a bit. Those using other models will also be getting the update in the coming weeks. And for the time being, be a bit more patient and suffer through typing with the remote.

Google brings Helpouts app to iPhone

If you’re in need of some expert advice on how to fix your bike or repair a dress, Google has brought in its Helpouts service to the iPhone (there is no iPad version at the moment).   You can schedule video chats with the experts but you will be limited to the free advice given. Google hasn’t brought paid Helpouts to the iPhone app. And you will need to be using a browser if you want to create listings for your instructional sessions.

Amazon brings single sign-on for Amazon accounts on Kindle Fire devices

Amazon wants you to use your Amazon log-in credentials to sign into apps with its new Login with Amazon feature. The company rolled out the feature first to its Kindle Fire devices—Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch and 8.9-inch as well as 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. The standard supports iOS and Android and is OAuth 2.0 complaint. Developers who want to use Login with Amazon can access information in the Amazon SDK.

Hackers take 900 Canadian tax IDs using Heartbleed

Hackers were quick to take advantage of the Heartbleed vulnerability and breached the Canada Revenue Agency to take around 900 Social Insurance Numbers and other unidentified business data. According to Engadget, the security breach happened after the public learned about Heartbleed. The agency tried to secure its system immediately but they weren’t apparently fast enough. There are reportedly no other breaches aside from this incident and the authorities are applying more security measures to make sure the compromised accounts won’t be misused.
