Samsung zooms in with the Galaxy S20 series

Samsung has officially taken off the wraps on the new Galaxy S20 series. As we've known for quite some time, Samsung has skipped the Galaxy S11 and jumped right into naming the phones the Galaxy S20. And the company focused on improving the crucial features of the phone: camera, display, and battery.

The Galaxy S20 and S20+ both come with 10-megapixel hole-punch front cameras, which are now located at the top center of the phone. And there is a substantial, rectangular camera bump in the back, which was already seen in the leaks. Both devices come with a 12-megapixel wide-angle sensor, 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and 64-megapixel telephoto camera at the back. The Galaxy S20+ gets an additional time-of-flight sensor to improve depth in photos. Zooming in is a significant feature here, with both devices capable of getting up to a 30x zoom via Samsung's Super Resolution Zoom technology.

Samsung kicks it up a notch with the flagship among the flagships, the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The quad-camera setup at the back of this phone features a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, 108-megapixel wide-angle lens, 48-megapixel telephoto lens, and the same time-of-flight sensor as the Galaxy S20+. Its selfie shooter is a 40-megapixel sensor. But what pushes the envelope with the Galaxy S20 Ultra is its zooming capabilities. It has a 10x hybrid optic zoom combined with its Super Resolution Zoom and the camera's artificial intelligence to get up to 100x digital zoom.

On the video front, all three handsets support up to 8K video recording.  But 8K isn't as ubiquitous yet, so this is for future-proofing really.

The same can be said with all three devices supporting 5G since 5G isn't available in Canada just yet. The Galaxy S20 series coming to the country will all run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage for the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra. The base model Galaxy S20 is only available with 128GB of storage. As expected, all come with Android 10 out of the box.

There will be a lot of screen real estate to work with here. The Galaxy S20 has a 6.2-inch Curved Dynamic AMOLED Display, the Galaxy S20+ has a 6.7-inch screen, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 6.9-inch one, which is the largest display for a smartphone available in Canada just yet. All three phones have 3,200 x 1,440 resolution with a 20:9 aspect ratio. But, more importantly, all support 120Hz resolution, guaranteeing a smooth interaction with the screen.

To help make the most out of what could be power-hungry devices, Samsung packs in a 4,000mAh battery in the Galaxy S20, 4,500mAh battery in the Galaxy S20+, and 5,000mAh battery in the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

One casualty of the new flagship line is the 3.5mm audio jack. All three phones don't make room for it. But perhaps it'll entice you to get the latest wireless Galaxy Buds+, too.

The three devices will be available starting March 6. The Galaxy S20 (12GB RAM/128GB storage) will come in Cosmic Grey and Cloud Blue for $1,319. The Galaxy S20+ with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage will come in Cloud Blue and Cosmic Black for $1,579, while the 512GB storage variant will be priced at $1,779 for the Cosmic Black colour only. Finally, the Galaxy S20 Ultra with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage will come in Cosmic Grey and Cosmic Black for $1,849, and the 512GB model will be available in Cosmic Grey only for $2,109. If you want the Cosmic Black S20 Ultra, that will be a Samsung Store exclusive.
