Broadcom CEO suggests delay of 2020 Apple iPhone launch
Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 2:26PM Apple parts supplier Broadcom claims the company will be releasing the 2020 iPhone a bit later than usual. According to comments from Broadcom CEO Hock Tan during the company's recent quarterly earnings call, the next-generation iPhone's release will be pushed back by a few weeks. Apple hasn't released any statements yet regarding this possible delay.
Tan, who often refers to Apple as "large North American mobile phone customer," said during the earnings call that the bump in wireless revenue will happen a quarter later than usual.
We usually get a new iPhone released in early September. But with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, delays in the supply chain are unavoidable, especially with travel mostly discouraged, and a lot of Apple employees are working from home.
"This year, we do not expect to see this uptick in revenue until our fourth fiscal quarter," the CEO added. "So accordingly, we expect, our wireless revenue in Q3 will be down sequentially."
The company will still be providing wireless parts for the iPhone, but the launch date of the device is still unknown. Phone manufacturers order their components months in advance. If Apple follows the September timeline, Broadcom should be getting its order for parts in the current quarter, but the chipmaker said that's not happening this year.
