Apple might be shutting down iTunes soon

We might see the end of iTunes soon. Apple is holding its annual developer's conference this coming week and rumours have been going around for a while that the company is ready to drop its bloated media app. According to BloombergApple is ready to spin off the many components of the iTunes app into their own individual apps. Apple has launched a TV app to complement its Apple TV+ video service. So, it isn't far-fetched that it spins everything else off, especially with rumours that macOS desktop apps can mimic its iOS counterparts. This means you get separate Music, Podcasts, and TV apps. The Music app could take over managing all the different "iThings" as Engadget calls them (local backups, OS updates, etc.). We're going to hear more when the Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off in San Jose, California on Monday.

Placeholder for ‘Files’ app goes live for a bit on App Store

With WWDC 2017 upon us, a new app from Apple shows up on App Store ahead of the event. Spotted by Steven Troughton-Smith, the placeholder app listing is for an app named Files. It’s just described as a “Files App for iOS” and other than that, there’s a blue folder icon. The app supposedly only supports 64-bit architecture. But other than that not much is known. Apple has already pulled the app from the App Store. It has been rumoured previously that Apple intended to drop support for 32-bit apps so this might be a good clue.

Registration lottery for Apple WWDC 2017 is now open

If you're planning to attend Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, you can now try your luck to secure tickets. Apple has opened registration lottery for the conference and you have until Friday, March 31 at 10 a.m. PT to enter the lottery. Once it closes, Apple will randomly pick entries and notify those who got selected that they can pay US$1,599 for the WWDC ticket. It must be noted that accommodations aren't included in that fee. But Apple says some hotels near the McEnery Convention Center in downtown San Jose, California where WWDC will be held are offering discounted rates.

The WWDC, which is happening from June 5 to 9, also offers scholarships to select individuals. Those eligible to apply for a scholarship need to be 13 years of age; enrolled in a full- or part-time course of study or be part of or be an alumni of a STEM organization; and a registered Apple developer or a member of a paid Apple Developer Program. Apple is accepting scholarship applications until April 2nd.
