Beats 1, Apple Music's global 24-hour radio station has started transmitting

iOS 8.4 beta testers in the US, who are using the latest version of the iPhone and iPad operating system which contains the new Apple Music service, can now receive the preliminary transmission of Beats 1, the global 24-hour radio station component of the new music service. With transmissions coming from NY, LA and London, Beats 1 boasts exclusive artist interviews, live performances as well as curated playlists of the latest, greatest that the music world has to offer (at least according to the DJs curating the music).

Slated to launch in earnest later on today, listeners who 'tune in' will hear the track "1/2" by Brian Eno, from his album "Ambient 1: Music for Airports." Apple Music, together with Beats 1 and the Connect interactive feature, is expected to launch one hour after the Tuesday launch of iOS 8.4, at 11 a.m. ET. No word on if and when Canadian users will receive the update or if Apple Music will be working when it does.

Google updates Chrome for iOS

The Google Chrome browser on iOS is getting an update to make use of some of the new iOS 8 features. There is now a new Today section widget for the browser. This'll help you launch the browser with a new tab open or begin a new voice search. If you copy a URL to the clipboard, you'll also be able to launch the site on Chrome via Notification Center.

The browser also adds app extension support for 1Password and LastPass. This means you can enter secured usernames and passwords without having to leave the app. The Chrome share/action button can also be found in the menu through the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner. Google also adds some new gestures for Chrome. You can pull down on a site and release to refresh a page; pull down the page without lifting your thumb/finger and swipe left to open a new tab. If you pull down and swipe right, that'll close the current tab.

Share away on Dropbox for iOS 8

iOS 8 users must be breathing a sigh of relief because it’s now easier to share files to Dropbox on the platform. The new version of Dropbox (3.7) adds the new extension for iOS 8. For example, you can send photos right to Dropbox from your iOS Photos app. It should also support Notes, files in Safari, and the like.

iOS 8 now installed on 63 % of devices

iOS 8 is now installed on 63 per cent of active iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices that can run the latest, greatest mobile operating system from Apple. While it took a while for iOS 8 to gain traction (mostly because of user apprehension that some bugs existed and needed to be fixed), speed of  adoption of iOS 8 is rising quite quickly.

iOS 8 was released together with the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus in September. Apple has been quick to issue patches and updates (see post below) and has already seeded iOS 8.2 to developers for release in the near future.
