Review: TomTom Go 500 GPS

Because I use my smartphone's various navigation features, my standalone GPS device has sat unused in my glove compartment for the past few years. The smartphone's constant data connection plus the variety of mapping apps and turn-by-turn direction options seemed good enough for me. But after I tried TomTom Go 500 GPS, I seriously reconsidered this approach.

A standalone GPS unit frees your smartphone from navigation duties and makes it possible to use the smartphone for fun stuff like playing back music, podcasts and most importantly, for making calls or taking messages (provided you're not driving, of course).

Google Maps makes its triumphant return to iOS

iPhone and iPad users can now exhale a collective breath of relief as the much awaited Google Maps app is now available for iOS and it features turn-by-turn directions for free. And yes, Street View is back! Apple was criticised for discontinuing the earlier version of Google Maps (made by Apple) in iOS 6 while it pushed its own Maps application. The new Google Maps is 100% a Google designed app. The 6.7 MB app is available now and each and every iOS user should go download it. Hit jump for more details.

Apple CEO Tim Cook issues apology for Maps lapse

Apple's CEO Tim Cook issued an apology to customers who may have experienced issues with the new Maps app that comes standard with iOS 6. In a letter on Apple.com, Cook stated that more than 100 million devices were already using the app, which have searched half a billion locations.

Cook's letter, which can be found in full after the break, promises that Maps will get better and gives users the option to download "map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app."

TomTom adds Mr. Burns and Marge Simpson as GPS voices, D'oh!

"Turn right, Smithers." TomTom has just added Montgomery Burns and Marge Simpson to the growing list of GPS turn by turn voices for their range of GPS navigation systems. Each of the character voices have been developed in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, The Gracie Films Worldwide Brand Division and Locutio Voice Technologies.
