Dropbox tests Google Docs integration in its app

Dropbox and Google have partnered to help make their products work better together. Now, we’re seeing one of the results of this partnership. Dropbox Business customers can be part of an open beta program that will let them edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides right from Dropbox app. It works similar to the Microsoft Office/Dropbox integration where you can create new Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files right from within Dropbox. The interface will be the same as what you get if you use Google, but if you want to stay within Dropbox, this lets you do so. It can help with collaboration, or at least, give Dropbox users more options to create or edit files in its service.

The integration also has these files showing up on your PC or Mac if you have the Dropbox app installed. It’ll also let you search for files without being limited to file name. You can search in the text. And, if you prefer, you can open Microsoft Office files in Google’s tools. The edits will be synced to the original file and the document type will be preserved so you can still choose to open it in Office if you want to. Dropbox’s native sharing tools are also available for Google Docs. So, when you click the share button in a Google file saved in Dropbox, you have the option to share two links. One grants edit access and the other just read only. You can also protect files to just be viewable within your organization. The feature will be coming to other Dropbox users later this year.

Wanting to replicate Netflix’s success with the interactive format, YouTube is also working on creating interactive content for its site. Ben Relles, YouTube’s head for unscripted programming, is taking the lead for the new division that focuses on interactive shows and live specials. The streaming site has been rethinking its original content plans. They have already recently cancelled some big-budget series. But they also have plans to introduce new programming in the coming weeks—perhaps this includes new interactive content.

YouTube’s head of original programming Susanne Daniels told Bloomberg in a statement, "We now have amazing new tools and opportunities to create and tell multilayered and interactive stories. Ben has an intuitive and experienced understanding of how the platform can enhance content, making him the perfect choice to develop this exciting new division."

Founder of VR content startup Jaunt joins Apple

Arthur van Hoff (left) joins Apple as senior architect for unnamed team

Apple might be making strides towards improving its augmented reality plans with one of its latest hires. The company recently brought onboard Jaunt founder Arthur van Hoff to become the senior architect for an unnamed team. Jaunt specializes in virtual reality content. And van Hoff has history working with multi-camera systems and creating content for VR and AR as well as capturing 3D images with depth-sensing cameras. He has helped the company shift to AR until he left in December 2018. He’s brought to the company a couple of months after HoloLens co-creator Avi Bar-Zeev left following three years of work on a rumoured AR headset.

We can’t say if van Hoff will be picking up that work. But some have reported that Apple also has plans to add laser-assisted cameras into the iPhone for capturing depth data and van Hoff could lend his expertise there. Only time will tell what the Jaunt founder can bring to the company.
