Apple responds to issue with HomePod staining wood surfaces

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Apple's HomePod has started to ship to customers in the US, UK and Australia and while many seem to be delighted by the audio quality and elegance of this diminutive speaker, others aren't too thrilled to discover that the HomePod's plastic ring at its base leaves circular marks on wood surfaces. See Apple's reply below.

"It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-dampening silicone base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces," Apple says. "The marks can be caused by oils diffusing between the silicone base and the table surface, and will often go away after several days when the speaker is removed from the wooden surface." Apple says the marks recede after a few days or users can simply wipe or treat their wood surfaces to remove the marks. If all fails, Apple's suggestion is “placing your HomePod on a different surface.”

Ryan Murphy signs five-year Netflix deal

Netflix has managed to snag yet another big name in the entertainment industry to create exclusive content for its platform. FX’s Ryan Murphy will be working for the streaming service after his contract at FX expires in July. The deal is reportedly worth up to US$300 million, which is said to be one of the biggest overall deals for a showrunner. Murphy already has two projects in the works for Netflix before this deal was closed. One is a One Flee Over the Cuckoo’s Nest fanfiction called Ratched and the other is political satire called The Politician.

Murphy is now to have produced some of the biggest shows for FX including American Horror Story, American Crime Story, 9-1-1, and Feud. These shows, as well as a recently announced 1980s musical drama called Pose will remain with FX. The showrunner has previously expressed his concern about staying with FX following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, especially with his content that is considered graphic and shocking with some racial and sexual provocations. He has expressed this concern to Disney CEO Bob Iger and it was being reported that Iger courted him personally and reassured him that Disney was interested in the type of offbeat content he’s able to create. But it looks like Murphy would much rather take his ideas to the streaming service.

OnePlus copies Xiaomi and pits OxygenOS against pure Android in Twitter poll, loses gracefully

Nothing beats pure Android experience, at least for a lot of users. Chinese company Xiaomi set to find out if its own MIUI 9 interface can beat out the pure Android One UI. Android One beat out MIUI 9 with the final result at 57% for Android One and the MIUI 9 getting 43%. While the results were expected, especially with Android fans wanting to get as close to stock Android as they can get, Xiaomi’s response was curious. The company deleted the poll three days after it put it up on February 7, perhaps out of shame for losing.

A couple of days after Xiaomi took down the poll, OnePlus seemed to have wanted to try the same thing out. The results were almost similar to Xiaomi’s with 58% leaning towards pure Android and 42% for OxygenOS. But OnePlus was a more gracious loser as evidenced by what happened after. The company’s CEO Carl Pei tweeted “Don’t delete this poll,” taking a jab perhaps at Xiaomi’s response to its results. The OnePlus employee who put up the poll even said they appreciated the response and that it “motivates” them to work on OxygenOS more.
