First Look: Moto G Plus

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

The Motorola Moto G has always been the puckish upstart, a mid-range smartphone that challenged and defied conventions by giving users some of the best features of premium smartphones (4G data, 720p HD display, long battery life, water resistance, microSD expansion) and placed it in an attractive package and price.

The fourth generation of the Moto G, which comes to Canada in two flavours including the Moto G Plus which we're checking out here, has definitely grown up and I don't mean just in size.

Google Photos rumoured to soon offer unlimited storage for ‘original quality’ photos on Nexus phones

In case you didn’t know Google Photos has been offering unlimited storage for all its users. The caveat is it’s for the compressed versions of photos and not as Google terms it “original quality.” If you own a Nexus device though, you might soon be able to upload your photos in its full resolution, no matter what size it is. Android Police did a full APK teardown of the newest Google Photos version and found a promo for Nexus devices. It says, “With Nexus, back up all you want. Unlimited free storage for original quality photos and videos uploaded from your Nexus device.” This’ll come in handy in the future especially with the advent of higher resolution smartphone cameras plus 2K and 4K video recording.

‘No Man’s Sky’ release pushed back to August

We’ve been waiting three years since No Man’s Sky was introduced but it looks like we have to wait a wee bit more. Hello Games, No Man’s Sky’s developer, announced that they will be pushing the North American release of the game to August 9th after it was previously announced to be released next month for both the Sony PlayStation 4 and PC. Hello Games’s Sean Murray said the delay is due to “some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards.” And with such a gigantic release backed by lots of hype, Murray is right to say that they needed to get this right: “For all our sakes though, we get one shot to make this game and we can’t mess it up.”

To say that No Man’s Sky is an ambitious sci-fi game is an understatement. The game is set in a procedurally-generated universe that has over 18 quintillion planets that you can explore. Each of these planets have their own unique ecosystems and wildlife. And while every player is going to be in the same virtual universe, with that amount of virtual planets, it’ll become unlikely you’d run into someone there, making its players usually the first people to step into a particular planet.

Your current phone might not be certified for Daydream VR

If you thought your current flagship device will prepare you for using Google’s Daydream VR (even the Nexus 6P developers are using to work with this VR platform), then you thought wrong. Google’s VR head Clay Bavor confirmed that there most likely won’t be “‘retroactively’ Daydream-ready phones” as the company wants to make sure that the components needed for a Daydream-ready device meets all their standards.

Engadget’s Daniel Cooper theorizes that the reason why existing smartphones won’t qualify is because of processing power. The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is set to launch soon and that chipset places a big emphasis on better mobile VR and augmented reality experience. The Nexus 6P is also said to be getting a refreshed version this year with 4GB of RAM and said Qualcomm processor. So if VR is something you’re interested in getting on your Android phone, you might want to hold out just a bit. These Daydream-ready phones should be heading our way near the end of the year.
