Sharp Canada launches largest 90-inch HDTV for $10,000

Sharp Electronics Canada launched the world’s largest LED smart TV, the 90-inch AQUOS LC-90LE745U. This new model rounds out Canada’s largest assortment of big screen TVs, including the market’s only 70-, 80- and 90-inch screens.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES - some stats from Sharp

  • More than half (57%) of Canadians ranked a better colour display in the top three features they would like their TVs to have. We think they should try Quattron’s four-colour display, which adds a yellow sub pixel to offer more colours than ever seen before on a TV!*
  • 24 per cent of Canadians identified having a larger TV screen as the most important feature they wish their TV had. While men are asking for a bigger screen (28%), women aren’t far behind, with 19% saying they would like a bigger TV.*
  • Sharp’s slim, eco-friendly models with Quattron colour are just what Canadians are looking for. Eco-friendliness and slim design tied for second (just behind a bigger screen) when it comes to the most important TV feature - 17% of respondents say they are the most important feature, while better colour display came in fourth with 15%.*

Standing nearly four feet tall and spanning six feet eight inches wide, the 90-inch AQUOS offers over two and a half times the viewing area of a 55-inch screen. It features cutting edge technology, including Smart TV functionality, built-in Wi-Fi and full internet connectivity for access to streaming video services, as well as an LED backlight and full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution. With such a stunning picture, sit as close as you like and see colours pop and never before seen details become visible.

“The new 90-inch AQUOS redefines an immersive, all-encompassing TV viewing experience,” says Abraham Cherian, Associate Vice-President, Consumer Solutions Division, Sharp Canada. “With the biggest screen and best quality picture available to Canadians, watching a blockbuster movie or a live action sports game is more phenomenal than ever before. The AQUOS 90-inch model delivers a unique suite of features for consumers who want top-of-the-line quality and full integration with all media types.”

Giving this TV its outstanding picture is a unique “double dome” ultra brilliant LED system that illuminates over 6 million dots on screen to produce the highest brightness and purest color, with incredibly deep contrast. For those craving a larger than life at-home cinematic experience, Sharp’s AQUOS 3DTV technology produces a brighter 3D experience, with reduced crosstalk blur. The television’s 120Hz Fine Motion Enhanced with AquoMotion 240 technology makes fast-action motion lifelike and puts you in the middle of any sporting action. With the unit’s built-in Wi-Fi, you can instantly connect beyond the living room with media of all types, including access to streaming content and an extensive library of online apps and services such as Netflix®, CinemaNow®, and AQUOS Advantage Live.

Despite its size, the 90” AQUOS is thin and light. Weighing only 141 lbs (without stand) and at less than five inches deep, it’s easy to mount on a wall. And with LED technology it’s so energy efficient; it uses less energy than two 75-watt light bulbs and has a very low cost of operation.

Canadians have room to go bigger

The addition of the AQUOS 90-inch model to Sharp’s family of large screen TVs expands Canada’s widest selection of big screen televisions, providing Canadians with the most choice for the home, no matter what size space they have.  A recent survey hosted on the Angus Reid Forum for Sharp Canada[i] found there is a common misconception among Canadians about the amount of viewing distance needed to properly view programming on a big screen TVAlmost half (46 per cent) of Canadians believe they need to sit three times the diagonal length of the TV screen or more away from it for the best viewing experience, when in actual fact, only about half that space is needed.  According to a study by Sharp Labs of America[ii], their scientists have found the optimal TV viewing distance is the diagonal length of the TV screen multiplied by 1.5. That means for a 90-inch screen only 11.25 feet of viewing room is needed to enjoy the optimal, immersive viewing experience.

The survey of Canadian adults[iii] also found that only four per cent of respondents chose the right viewing distance.  Forty per cent of Canadians surveyed currently sit between nine and 12 feet away from the television while viewing, revealing that they actually have room for a TV of 70-inches or larger.  Four in 10 Canadians (43 per cent) have additional space to sit further back from the TV in the room where they watch their largest television. And Canadians do want a bigger screen at home.  In a recent poll,[iv] 24 per cent of Canadians identified having a larger TV screen as the most important feature they wish their TV had and a majority of respondents who would want a bigger TV screen (54 per cent) would choose a screen 50-inches or larger.

Guide to optimal viewing

For optimal viewing, take the diagonal length of your TV screen and multiply it by 1.5.  For instance:

·         For a 60-inch TV, sit 7.5 feet (7’6”) back

·         For a 70-inch TV, sit 8.75 feet (8’9”) back

·         For an 80-inch TV, sit 10 feet back

·         For a 90-inch TV, sit 11.25 feet (11’3”) back
