Meet the AirLight Pro, L’Oréal’s new hairdryer that mimics the sun and wind

L’Oréal, known for unveiling innovative beauty products at CES, is introducing a new hairdryer called the AirLight Pro. It uses infrared light and airflow to dry hair faster and more gently than conventional heat.

The AirLight Pro is inspired by how the sun and wind dry rain, says Guive Balooch, L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator vice president. The infrared light evaporates water on the hair surface while preserving moisture inside the strand. The light also has a hydrating effect on hair, unlike UV light.

L'Oreal claims the hairdryer reduces drying time by 30 percent and energy usage by 31 percent while leaving hair smoother and more hydrated.

The AirLight Pro is a collaboration between L’Oréal and Zuvi, a startup that made a similar light-based hairdryer. The product comes with an app and smart attachments that let users customize the speed and temperature.

The AirLight Pro will be available for professionals and consumers later this year at a price below US$400 (around CA$535).
