Apple Podcasts makes it easier to switch between video and audio podcasts

Source: Apple

Apple Podcasts is simplifying the switch between video and audio podcasts with the introduction of HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. According to the company, the technology goes beyond simple playback, promising creators monetization tools while providing listeners with a high-fidelity viewing experience. Videos on the podcast app will support offline downloads and a full-screen horizontal mode.

Apple’s HLS technology is designed to ensure smooth playback by automatically adjusting video quality based on your connection. Whether streaming on Wi-Fi or cellular, the app aims to maintain a consistent, high-definition experience. These video episodes will be fully integrated into the existing Apple Podcasts ecosystem, appearing in personalized recommendations and curated editorial sections, like the "New" and "Category" tabs, to help with discovery.

Beta testing for HLS video is available starting today for developers and enthusiasts running iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4. The full public rollout is expected in the spring across iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, and the web.
