New Apple safety features allow parents to filter apps and web access for kids

Apple announced a major upgrade to its ecosystem’s content filtering to offer parents granular control over exactly what their children can see and download. These new content parameters are part of a broader background preview of Apple’s upcoming child safety suite.  

Launching this fall, the update allows parents to establish a highly customized digital environment right from the start. Rather than giving children open access to a device, parents can choose to restrict them to a small selection of essential apps, a curated starter set, or manually approved applications, with the ability to expand access as the child matures.

The centrepiece of this content management upgrade is the introduction of Ask to Browse. Expanding on the existing Ask to Buy feature, which requires a child to get parental approval before purchasing or downloading any app, Ask to Browse brings this strict permission model to the open web.

When enabled, children using Safari on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac will be blocked from opening unapproved websites until a permission request is sent to and approved by a parent directly.
