Toshiba exits laptop business, sells Dynabook brand to Sharp

Toshiba T1100

Toshiba quietly divests itself of its laptop business, selling its remaining 19.9% percent stake in its Dynabook laptop brand to Sharp. Back in 2018, the company sold 80.1% of its stake in the brand to Sharp. The move isn't surprising given how Toshiba hasn't been active in the industry in a while. It's still noteworthy, though, as it closes a 35-year chapter in Toshiba's history.

The company was considered a pioneer in the portable computer space. The 1985 T1100 model was regarded as the first mainstream laptop computer. It set a design template for laptops that remained unchanged until Apple PowerBook laptops were introduced in 1991. that didn't change much until Apple's PowerBook line arrived in 1991. The company thrived in the 1990s and 2000s with its Satellite, Portégé, and Qosmio lines. The company isn't entirely out of the computing space, though, as it is still active in the printing and storage markets and the energy and retail segments.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak hasn't worked with the company for over 30 years, but he's still beloved by many in the tech community. It seems apt that Woz will be celebrating his 70th birthday online and for a good cause. His wife Janet set up a virtual party that will live stream on Twitch, Twitter, and Woz's birthday site to benefit musician Jewel's Inspiring Children Foundation.

The live stream will start at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, with special guests Octavia Spencer, Shaquille O'Neal, Shepherd Fairey, David Copperfield, George Takei, and Jewel as the event's host. After the live stream, it will kick off "11 Days of Wozdom," which is described as an 11-day challenge to win Apple gear and other merchandise, a shout-out from Woz on Twitter, and many more. The challenges haven't been revealed yet, but we expect to hear about them during the live stream.

By Canadian Reviewer Staff

The time seems right for the humble flip phone to make a comeback. During these uncertain times when connectivity is critical as is long battery life, there are vary few affordable options for an easy to use and reliable phone used mainly for voice calls.

Alcatel’s Go Flip 3 will be a compelling option for people who need a second (or third phone), who require the ability to make and take voice calls, and who seek a distraction free communications device. The way the Go Flip 3 is designed makes it ideal for younger kids who need a phone to call their parents without the app and gaming temptation found in most smartphones.
