Privates app lets you take back a text before your recipient opens it, prevent screenshots

Ever given into a drunken text or sent one off in a fit of rage that you’ll later regret? Well, a new app hopes to help you out with that unfortunate message. Privates can help you recall a text or picture message before your recipient opens it. You just need to tap on the Recall button to get the message back. This’ll delete the message from Privates server. If your recipient is glued to their phone, you’ll have to act fast.

The app boasts of having screenshot prevention, meaning your recipient can’t take screenshots and send it to others. Of course, physically passing around the phone is a different story. Privates has three levels of security: Mild, Wild, and Insane—which will delete unread messages after either 24, 12, or three hours, respectively. There’s also a Reactions feature that will show you the facial expression of your recipient when they see the message. It’s initially available for iOS but will be coming to Android and Windows soon.

Instagram testing out a monochromatic look for app

Screenshot by Anton Abramov

Whether this new look will make it out of testing or not, Instagram is looking to stay fresh and of the moment. The app is going through a “design test” for a small number of people that does away with the iconic blues and opts for a more monochromatic look with blacks and whites. It might seem a bit drab but this’ll put the focus on the photos themselves. This look might not make its way to your phone but if it did, do you like it?

Nokia in talks to buy Withings for US $191 million

Nokia is reportedly in talks to buy French fitness gadget and wearable company Withings who made some waves a few years ago with its Activite fitness trackers which resembled classic timepieces. Nokia is apparently interested in investing into the health tracking aspect of the company, similar to Apple's HealthKit initiative.

Withings was founded in 2008 and has brought to market various connected health appliances, including smart watches, fitness trackers, thermometers, and baby monitors, among other gadgets. Nokia, who famously sold their phone business to Microsoft as well as their Here maps to a consortium of carmakers, is focused on Internet of Things and connected lifestyle products and ecosystems.

"We have said consistently that digital health was an area of strategic interest to Nokia, and we are now taking concrete action to tap the opportunity in this large and important market," said Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri.
