OnePlus pauses foldable development, skipping Open 2 launch

Photo: OnePlus

OnePlus said it will not release a follow-up to its first foldable phone, the OnePlus Open, this year. Vale G, OnePlus Open product manager, confirmed the company is "recalibrating for innovation" and pausing its foldable plans. This decision comes as OPPO prepares to launch the Find N5 in China, leading many to expect a corresponding OnePlus Open 2.

While OnePlus assures users it's not abandoning the foldable market, the company stated it wants to focus on "setting new benchmarks" and believes this pause is the "right approach." The existing OnePlus Open will continue to receive software updates and security patches. This development also raises the possibility of the Oppo Find N5 being released internationally.

OnePlus is expected to launch the OnePlus 13R on January 7 at the OnePlus 13 launch. And a few days ahead of the event, the OnePlus 13R gets leaked online in two colours. One comes in a lighter silver shade and the other in a darker gray.

Confirmed specs of the phone include a large 6,000mAh battery and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The phone is supposedly a rebranded version of the OnePlus Ace 5, so we expect to see some similarities between the devices.

OnePlus 13 sports a new under-display fingerprint scanner

Photo: OnePlus

OnePlus 13 debuted in China and brought a new 6.82-inch display by BOE. And with it comes a new under-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner from Goodix. According to a company executive, this sensor is faster and safer with its innovative architecture and wafer-level acoustic layer processing. This new scanner lets you unlock the phone with wet or dirty fingers.

This ultrasonic scanner uses sound waves to capture a detailed 3D of the fingerprint. It emits an ultrasonic pulse, which bounces back from the finger for a high-res depth-based fingerprint image. It's a more secure option than an optical sensor but more expensive. That's why we only see this technology brought to flagships. Goodix supplies this scanner to companies like Samsung and Google, so you may see more of it in its devices.
