Twitter to lift 140 character limit for direct messages

The basic premise of what makes Twitter, well, Twitter is the brevity upon which you can impart knowledge or your useless brain farts on the Internet in under 140 characters. That’s about to change though but just for direct messages. You now don’t have to send truncated DMs to your Twitter followers as the social network plans to lift the limit and raise it up to 10,000 words (which is a lot). The changes will reportedly take place next month to give developers a chance to update their apps and make it ready for this change.

Twitter lets users share block lists

If you’ve been a victim of trolls and online harassment on Twitter, the block feature and block lists are probably some of your favorite things. Now, making it easier for you to help out friends who want to cut out the noise and chaos, you can now export your block list to share with others. You can also now import block lists via the block page on your Twitter account. Rollout isn’t widespread yet but the feature should be coming to you soon.

Twitter reportedly in talks to buy Flipboard

We’re not quite sure what Twitter might want with Flipboard but there are talks that they want to purchase it. According to Re/Code, Twitter wants to buy Flipboard in an all-stock deal that would put Flipboard’s value over US$1 billion. Talks have begun at the start of the year supposedly. And it’s headed by Twitter’s CFO Anthony Noto.

Perhaps Twitter aims for Flipboard’s curation tools or even the advertising the news curator does. If there’s any truth to the reports, then we’d have to wait for a bit to hear from either or both companies.

Google experiments with tweets in mobile search results

Google has partnered with Twitter a few months back to give the search giant more access to tweets. We’re starting to see the fruits of this deal with a new feature on Google Search for mobile. Google is testing out putting tweets into search results on mobile. For example, if you were searching for #Maythe4thbewithyou, tweets of that topic will start showing up grouped in a carousel so you can peruse through the latest tweets. It is currently a small test though and only some users are able to see this at the moment. But once, Google integrates this more, we might be seeing a more polished version of this feature in the near future.
