Viber gets a redesign and better call quality

Viber introduces some important changes to its Android and iOS apps in a move to add more value for its users. The app reportedly now gets better voice and video quality while keeping data usage at a minimum. Calls over 2G will only use up 84KBs of data per minute.

The Android app also now makes it easier to share contacts between users and in group conversations. Making video calls can also now be done straight from your recent calls list or from someone’s contact profile. You also see rich links now and you get new payment options for buying more credits. The iOS version also gets the rich links, easier video calling, contact sharing, and the ability to add groups to a public chat. New animated stickers are also coming to the Viber app on iOS.

Twitter rolls out landscape mode for Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Helping Apple iPhone 6 Plus users see more Twitter on their screen, the social network adds a landscape mode to the super-sized iPhone’s Twitter app. Not only do you see more of the user interface at once. There is also a new compose window and threaded conversation design. The new UI looks rather similar to how Twitter looks like on the iPad. No word yet if Twitter plans to introduce this to the other iPhone models.

Google brings Project Tango development kit to Canada and South Korea

Google’s Project Tango hasn’t been making the news lately. But the company’s experiments with machine vision and sensing technology continue. In fact, the Project Tango development kit is out now for Canada and South Korea. The dev tablets now cost $512 (from the $1,024 at launch). It comes with a 7-inch display, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a Tegra K1 processor, and runs on Android 4.4 KitKat (but gets frequent updates to improve its unique software capabilities). What sets it apart is the depth-sensing cameras and orientations sensors that allow it to create a 3D map of a certain area.

By the end of the month, or on August 26th to be exact, the tablet will also be available in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The device can be bought by anyone in the supported country, but, of course, it’s geared towards software developers.

Apple’s Siri will supposedly be able to transcribe your voicemail

A new report claims Apple will be expanding the capability of Siri, turning it more into a virtual secretary. This voice assistant will reportedly get the ability to transcribe your voicemails into text. When someone calls you you, the calls will be redirected to Siri instead of the audio recorder and a beep. Siri will then give select callers a message as to why you can’t be reached at the moment and even give your location if needed. Siri will then transcribe the message it received. This is reportedly in limited testing at Apple now and should be released by next year, possibly in time for iOS 10.
